Composer, Clarinetist
This Uncommon
Structured as a musical conversation, the 7-minute piece explores how people who have experienced loss find strength in each other. This Uncommon begins with a call and answer between the baritone and horn. As the conversation builds and the other three voices enter, there is both sadness and tension, but eventually a bit of peace for everyone is found. An important musical figure comes at measure 121, when each part has a tied eighth-note figure that Sievert explains sounds like each instrument saying the words, “not alone,” and affirming each other's feelings. This performance is the stage debut of the piece and the composer's second original commission to debut in Quincy after 2018's Ignite for the Quincy Symphony Orchestra.
